When are travel team tryouts?

For our indoor travel teams we hold tryouts two times per year:

  1. Main Tryout: is usually held around the third Saturday in August (August 19th in 2023)
    1. During Main tryouts, rosters are completely open and all coaches are looking for between 11-13 players to fill out their teams
      1. When a player commits to a team during Main tryouts in August, they are committing for the full year season (August - July 4th)
      2. Players that accept a spot on a travel team during Main tryouts do not need to try out again in May during Team Add-On Day
  2. Team Add-On Day (aka Summer Tryouts): is held around the first weekend of May (May 6-7th, in 2023)
    1. During Team Add-On Day, players are being evaluated to fill any open roster spots for teams that were formed during the Main tryout back in August, or for completely new teams that will be formed during the Summer tryouts.
      1. Players that accept a spot on a team during Summer Team Add-On Day are committed to teams for the duration of the club volleyball season (July 4th)

Pre-Tryout Evaluation Clinics

During Bay to Bay travel team tryouts we try to give athletes as many opportunities to showcase their skills as possible. With that in mind, each registration for indoor tryouts includes access to pre-tryout evaluation clinic(s) that mimic the main tryout practice plan but in a less stressful setting.

This gives athletes and coaches more opportunities to work together before final decisions are made on team rosters. No extra registration is required, once you are registered for tryouts you are automatically on the list for pre-tryout evals.

Day of Tryouts Process

On the day of tryouts we aim to make everything as smooth as possible from parking, to check-in, to the clinic practice plan, to the offering process. Check out this overview of the day of below:

  1. You will receive a “Night Before” reminder email with information on age group time slots, where to park, gym location, and any other helpful information needed when preparing to get to tryouts.
  2. Check-in for each age group will start 45 minutes prior to the start of the tryout session. Please ensure that you arrive early for your time slot to check in at the desk and receive your tryout t-shirt or tryout number
    1. Each athlete is assigned a number on the back of their t-shirt that corresponds to their online tryout registration profile
  3. At the start of your tryout session the lead coach will bring all of the athletes to center court to provide a general overview of the tryout process and introduce the evaluating coaches for that age group
  4. Lead coach will then lead athletes through a brief warmup and demonstrate the first drill of the practice session
  5. The practice session is split into three categories: skill work, dynamic work, and gameplay.
    1. Skill work: focuses on individual skills and touches on the ball (i.e. partner passing, serving, defense, blocking)
    2. Dynamic work: incorporates multiple skills at once but not yet in a game-like environment (i.e. butterfly drill with attacking)
    3. Gameplay: 6 on 6 style wash drills or games that allow coaches to see how you move on the court and interact amongst teammates
